Clergy news
24 December 2010 The Reverend Richard Coles, currently Senior Curate of St Paul's, Knightsbridge, has been appointed Parish Priest of St Mary the Virgin, Finedon (Northamptonshire) in the Diocese of Peterborough. Richard will continue to combine his work as both broadcaster and priest in his new parish. Richard's last Sunday at St Paul's, Knightsbridge will be Sunday 16 January 2011 and he will be licensed at St Mary the Virgin Finedon some time early in the spring. 17 December 2010 Fr David Gilmore was yesterday found by a tribunal to be guilty of conduct unbecoming or inappropriate to the office and work of a clerk in holy orders. He has been removed from office as Rector of St Anne's, Soho and is prohibited from exercising any function of his Orders (that is, exercising ministry as a priest in the Church of England) for two years. The Diocese is working to ensure that services at St Anne's continue as normal and is making arrangements for the spiritual care of the parish. Clergy news
12 December 2010 St Martin-in-the-Fields reports that it is delighted to announce that the Revd Paul Lau has agreed to extend his ministry at the church for a further four years, the Revd Richard Carter for a further three years and the Revd Rosy Fairhurst for a further year. 24 November 2010 The Bishop of London has licensed the Revd Dr James Walters as Anglican Chaplain to the London School of Economics and Political Science. The LSE lies in the east of the Deanery, mainly in the parish of St Mary le Strand, and plans to open a new multi-faith prayer centre in 2013. We wish James well in his new ministry here. 19 November 2010 The Reverend Roger Holloway, Preacher of Gray's Inn Chapel died on 31 October, aged 76. Roger was elected Preacher (effectively chaplain) of Gray's Inn in 1997, before which he served as Priest-Vicar at St Margaret's, Westminster which will host his memorial service at 6pm on Monday 28 February 2011. 18 November 2010 Fr David Cherry was inducted and instituted yesterday as Vicar of St Barnabas', Pimlico and instituted as Vicar of St Mary's, Bourne Street at a service of Pontifical High Mass celebrated by the Bishop of London. 9 November 2010 The ninth General Synod will be inaugurated by HM The Queen at Church House, Westminster on 23 November. Synod will be in session until late afternoon on 24 November. It will be debating the Big Society, considering the Anglican Communion Covenant and dealing with other legislative business concerning marriage in churches, the introduction of common tenure in 2011 and clergy discipline. 20 October 2010 The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has announced that the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme will continue beyond March 2011. 12 October 2010 Twenty candidates have been elected to the General Synod to represent the Diocese of London; ten to the House of Clergy and ten to the House of Laity. Clergy appointments
6 October 2010 Fr Matthew Woodward, currently Vicar of St Saviour Pimlico has been appointed Rector of the Parish of the Transfiguration, San Mateo (in the San Francisco Bay Area) in the Diocese of California. 27 September 2010 So far this year the Deanery has now raised £21,000 for Church of England schools in the area. The funds have been distributed to the London Diocesan Board for Schools and six Church of England primary schools within the Deanery. We are very grateful to the St Marylebone Educational Foundation, the Dean & Chapter of Westminster Abbey and all of the parishes and congregations of the Deanery which have made donations to support local church schools. 17 September 2010 Voting is now underway across the Church of England to elect 378 members of General Synod. These elections take place every five years. In the Diocese of London we are invited to elect ten members of the House of Laity and ten members of the House of Clergy. If you are an elected member of Deanery Synod or a member of clergy licensed in the Deanery then you are part of the electoral college for General Synod. Your vote needs to be cast before voting ends on 8 October. National survey of self-supporting Anglican clergy
10 September 2010 The first national survey of self-supporting Anglican clergy for nearly 30 years, with the support of the Ministry Division, is taking place between 10 September and 20 October 2010. If you are a self-supporting member of the clergy then you are invited to take about 20 minutes to fill in a questionnaire on your life and work as a non-stipendiary priest or deacon online or you can request a paper version from: The Revd Dr Teresa Morgan, Oriel College, Oxford, OX1 4EW teresa.morgan@oriel.ox.ac.uk 01865 728807 The information collected through this survey will form the basis of the first large-scale study of self-supporting licensed Anglican clergy in the UK for nearly 30 years. It aims to create a snapshot of the many ways and many environments in which SSMs serve, and the amount of time they give in service. 6 September 2010 It has been announced that the Pope will travel publicly through the Deanery in the "popemobile" during his state visit to the UK. On Friday 17 September, the Pope will travel from Lambeth Palace to Westminster Hall via Lambeth Bridge and Millbank to arrive in time to make an address at the Palace of Westminster at 5.10pm. This journey will take the Pope through the parishes of St Stephen, Rochester Row and St Matthew Westminster. On Saturday 18 September, the Pope will travel along Horse Guards Road, The Mall, Constitution Hill and Hyde Park Corner to arrive at Hyde Park in time for a vigil beginning at 6.15pm. This journey will take the Pope through the parishes of St Martin-in-the-Fields and St Paul Knightsbridge (briefly!) and into the parish of St George, Hanover Square. 2012 Games and the Church
1 September 2010 More than Gold has been established to enable UK churches to engage with the 2012 Olympic games. The triathlon and 10km open water swim (at Hyde Park) and beach volleyball (at Horse Guards Parade) will be held within parishes of the Deanery. Most of the VIPs who will be staying in London will be at hotels on Park Lane and in Mayfair. A briefing is being held from 7pm on Wednesday 3 November at Regent Hall, Oxford Street. Admission is open to anyone involved with and committed to the mission and future of their church. Attendance is free and there will be a retiring collection. Autumn Education Programme
27 August 2010 St Martin-in-the-Fields has announced its Autumn Education Programme, a series of five lectures throughout autumn, beginning on Monday 27 September at 7pm at St Martin-in-the-Fields Church. The lectures focus this autumn on engaging deeply with scripture and lectures will be given by the Revd Professor Richard Burridge, the Revd Clare Herbert & the Revd Dr Arnold Browne, the Revd Canon Lucy Winkett, the Revd Professor Frances Young OBE and the Very Revd Jeffrey John. All are welcome to attend. Attendance is free and there is a retiring collection to help finance the series. A flyer is available for download below:

6 August 2010 The Revd Dr James Walters has been appointed Chaplain of the London School of Economics and Political Science. The LSE lies in the east of the Deanery. Fr Jim is currently Assistant Curate of St John-at-Hampstead. Fr Jim succeeds the Revd David Peebles who has been appointed Rector of St George's, Bloomsbury with Christ Church, Woburn Square in the South Campden (Holborn & St Pancras) Deanery. 7 August 2010 The Revd David Cherry is to be the next Vicar of St Mary's, Bourne Street and of St Barnabas, Pimlico. Fr Cherry has been Chaplain to the University of Westminster since 2003 and an honorary assistant priest at St Mary's since July 2009. Fr Cherry will be instituted as Vicar of both parishes on 17 November 2010. We look forward to welcoming him in his new role. New church app for iPhone users
29 July 2010 Earlier this month, a new iPhone application was launched which provides iPhone users with details of their nearest church as well as daily prayer feeds from the Church of England and other features. The application, called MyDiocese, was developed in conjunction with the Diocese of Guildford and can be downloaded from the iTunes store. 23 July 2010 The Revd Clare Herbert will become Lecturer in Inclusive Theology at St Martin-in-the-Fields from 1 October. St Martin's uses the title "Lecturer" for priests with gifts in education. 5 July 2010 The Papal Visit Co-Ordinator has confirmed that the Pope will be present at an open-air vigil of prayer in Hyde Park when he visits the UK in September. 23 June 2010 Canon Mark Oakley, Priest in Charge of the Grosvenor Chapel Mayfair and formerly our Area Dean is to be the next Canon Treasurer of St Paul's Cathedral. Fr Mark's last Sunday at the Grosvenor Chapel before taking up his new post as a residentiary canon will be 12 September. 26 March 2010 A number of attacks have recently been reported on churches in the Covent Garden area. Forthcoming elections to General Synod20 March 2010 Elections will be held during 2010 for General Synod 2010-2016. General Synod is likely to be dissolved by HM the Queen on or near 13 July 2010. Elections will then be held within three months. The Diocese of London will be invited to elect ten members of clergy to the House of Clergy of General Synod and ten lay members to the House of Laity of General Synod.
