Clergy appointments
20 December 2012 The Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, at present Vicar of St Peter's, Eaton Square, has been appointed Canon Treasurer of Canterbury Cathedral. Nick will be installed at Canterbury on Sunday 10 March 2013 and we wish him well in his future ministry in Canterbury. 29 October 2012 The Revd Simon Buckley is to join St Anne's, Soho as its next Priest in Charge. Simon will be licensed by the Bishop of London at some point in the early spring of 2013. At present Simon serves at St Botolph's, Aldgate and is a longstanding friend of St Anne's, having previously served as an assistant priest in the parish. We very much look forward to welcoming Simon back to the Deanery in 2013. Elections t0 the Area Council
10 September 2012 The process for electing representatives to the Area Council for the Two Cities Area begins on 25 September with the issue of nomination papers. Members of Deanery Synod will nominate candidates and form the electoral college, but candidates themselves need not be a member of the Deanery Synod to stand for election to the Area Council. The Area Council provides support and advice to the Bishop of London on the mission, ministry and administration of the Church in the Two Cities Area and has other duties relating to the Pastoral Measure and finance. 30 August 2012 The Revd Timothy Mullins, currently Chaplain at Radley College, near Abingdon in the Diocese of Oxford, is to be Associate Vicar at St Michael's, Chester Square from 16 September. We look forward to welcoming Timothy to the Deanery next month. Appointments in the Deanery
2 August 2012 Fr Richard Fermer, at present Assistant Priest at St George's, Paris in the Diocese in Europe, is to be the next Priest-in-Charge of the Grosvenor Chapel, Mayfair. We look forward to welcoming Richard and his wife Giseli to the Deanery when Richard is licensed to his new post in the autumn. 8 July 2012 The number of candidates nominated for Diocesan Synod by this Deanery did not exceed the number of places we were asked to fill so those nominated have been deemed elected to Diocesan Synod. Four vacancies remain for this deanery in the House of Clergy of the Diocesan Synod. 28 June 2012 So far this year the Deanery has raised over £12,000 for Church of England schools in the area. The funds have been distributed to six Church of England primary schools within the Deanery. We are very grateful to the Dean & Chapter of Westminster Abbey and all of the parishes and congregations of the Deanery that have made donations to support local church schools. Over the past ten years the Deanery has donated funds exceeding £175,000 to support local church schools thanks to the generosity of its churches, Westminster Abbey and local charitable foundations. 22 June 2012 The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded St Martin-in-Fields a £1m grant through the Catalyst: Endowments programme, under which St Martin's will aim to raise a further £1m in order to access the grant. The grant and additional funds raised will establish an endowment for St Martin's to maintain the church building in fine condition into the future, following its successful restoration and renewal in 2008. 15 June 2012 The Bishop of London has visited St Barnabas' Primary School, Pimlico to bless the school's new floor which provides the school with extra class rooms, office space and a library. 12 June 2012 St Martin-in-the-Fields has hosted a prayer vigil to mark the start of the 100 day long Olympic Truce. The Olympic Truce resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly by all 193 nations for the first time on 17 October 2011 for this year's London games. St Martin-in-the-Fields held a twelve-hour prayer vigil from 11pm on Friday evening which concluded with a service at 11am on Saturday at which the Bishop of London and other faith leaders were present. We are invited throughout the next 100 days to pray for peace and for a legacy of peace when the Truce ends on 28 October. Please click here to read the UN resolution. Exhibition at Westminster Abbey
8 May 2012 Westminster Abbey will host a special exhibition of photography celebrating "The Queen and Her Abbey" from 14 May to 14 September 2012. The exhibition will show pictures featuring moments from throughout the Queen's life including Her Majesty's wedding to Prince Philip and the coronation as well as less well known facets of the Queen's relationship with the Abbey. 28 February 2012 Deanery Synod yesterday evening considered, as requested by the London Diocesan Synod, the proposed Anglican Communion Covenant. Synod met at Kings College London in joint session with the Deanery Synods of Westminster (St Marylebone) and Westminster (Paddington). Members of Synod heard a presentation about the proposed Covenant from the Revd Dr Anders Bergquist and engaged in debate before dividing by Synod and Houses to vote. Westminster (St Margaret) Deanery Synod voted by 36 votes to 4 against the proposal that this Synod approve the draft Act of Synod adopting the Anglican Communion Covenant. The results of the vote were as follows: House of Clergy In favour: 1 Against: 14 Abstentions: 2 House of Laity In favour: 3 Against: 22 Abstentions: 6 The motion also fell in the other two Westminster Synods, by votes of 20-3 in St Marylebone and by votes of 8-1 in Paddington. Parish buying service to be launched
27 January 2012 The Church of England has announced the launch of the Parish Buying website on 30 January. This service will enable parishes to save money on a range of products and services by making use of collective purchasing across the Church of England. It also provides reassurance that suppliers have been vetted and any contracts reviewed. The PCC Treasurers of the Deanery expressed the hope for an initiative of this type when they met in 2010. 20 January 2012 The Revd Christopher Trundle is to join the Deanery as Assistant Curate of St Gabriel's, Pimlico. Fr Christopher is at present Assistant Curate of St Paul's, Tottenham and was ordained priest in May 2011 having studied theology at Trinity College, Cambridge and trained for for ordination at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield. We look forward to welcoming Christopher to the Deanery on Wednesday 7 March when he is to be licensed at St Gabriel's by the Bishop of London. Proposed Sunday parking charges scrapped
19 January 2012 Westminster City Council has announced that it will rescind its proposals to introduce Sunday parking charges following widespread opposition from businesses, the public and the Church. It will instead create a commission to consider "the most effective way that the Council can support business, lessen congestion and improve the quality of life of residents living in the West End". Local Church of England engagement with the Council was led in large part by the Rector and Churchwardens of St George's, Hanover Square. 12 January 2012 The Revd James Mustard, Curate of St Peter's, Eaton Square and Clerical Secretary of the Deanery Synod is to be the next Rector of St Mary the Virgin, East Barnet in the Diocese of St Albans (a Crown appointment). James will be installed and inducted as Rector of his new parish at 8pm on 25 April and his last Sunday at St Peter's, Eaton Square will be 18 March.
